There was a tie at the Spelling Bee!
God I love the Spelling Bee.
If there’s anything that makes me hate people a little less, it’s the Spelling Bee. It’s these two kids going home every single day after school and studying the dictionary. It’s the look on their faces when they get it wrong. It’s the relief on their faces when they get it right. Once in a while though, when it’s a word they can definitely spell, that they definitely studied, you might see a cocky breeze pass through their eyes – just a quick moment, but that’s the hit that keeps us, them, coming back.
Nothing feels as good as knowing the answer.
I wonder why people forget that.
Yesterday on The Social, we interviewed Katty Kay, author of The Confidence Code: The Science And Art of Self-Assurance – What Women Should Know. There’s a quote in the book by a Stanford professor that really stayed with me:
“If life were one long grade school, women would be the undisputed rulers of the world.”
At some point though, around the onset of puberty, girls lose confidence. Kay said that by the time we all get to be adults, the confidence disparity between girls and boys is quite alarming. One of her examples: If a woman and a man were to both take a test, having had the same amount of preparation, and they both did poorly on that test, the most likely response from the woman would be that “I just wasn’t good enough”. The most likely response from the man would be “Wow, that was a really hard test”.
Fascinating, right? The Confidence Code. If you’re looking for a new book, you should really consider this one.
