Dear Gossips,
Summer squeezed out one more breakup on Labour Day: after 18 years together, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are officially over, confirming their split to PEOPLE:
"With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history. We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward."
18 years!
She endured 18 years!
And the last year, well, there was rehab. There were rumours. For months there have been reports that they were done, even though they were seen through July in New York, attending several Broadway productions together.
The safe answer is that it ran its course. There’s running the course, though, and then there’s the course being so untenable that you have to just bail off the track. Jennifer Westfeldt might have a lot in common with Jennifer Garner.
As for the timing of the announcement, two possibilities: either they – and by “they” I mean “he” – wanted it out of the way well ahead of the Emmys or they wanted to get ahead of something brewing in the tabloids this week.
Speaking of the Emmys… for me, Labour Day weekend always used to mean the start of school. In gossip, Labour Day weekend is the beginning of the rush. TIFF begins on Thursday. The festival takes us right up to Emmy weekend. It’s Jon Hamm’s 8th nomination for Best Actor in a Drama. He’s never won. He’s the sentimental favourite. Bryan Cranston isn’t playing anymore so it’s his to lose. And if and when he wins, well, then we’re assholes for talking about whether or not he was an asshole to her while she stood by him through all those losses.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
