As reported the other day - click here for a refresher - Jessica Biel had apparently locked up the role of Viper in Hugh Jackman’s upcoming The Wolverine directed by James Mangold. Production is to begin next month. And I was actually very supportive of this career decision. She doesn’t have much range. Physicality is definitely in her range. She could have been good at this.
But this is not happening anymore. The explanation that’s being forced upon us is that Biel “passed” on the role. Um, putting aside the fact that this girl starred in Valentine’s Day AND New Year’s Eve - which speaks to how “selective” she is with her jobs - let’s humour her here and discuss why Jessica Biel might decline a big budget superhero movie with multi-picture potential....(as IF!)
With filming to begin imminently, is it because she didn’t want her work to interfere with her wedding plans?
With filming to take place in Australia and Japan, was she worried she’d be away from Justin Timberlake too long...and, well, considering that sometimes he cheats on her, it might make her anxious?
Or was it the great thespian of our time, Justin Timberlake himself, who advised his fiancée to wait, wait for a role that was more deserving of her true acting talent, a role that Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightley, Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Kirsten Dunst, Emily Blunt, Mia Wasikowska, and Abbie Cornish would all have to reject first?
Whatever the explanation, it’s always about Justin, didn’t you know?
That’s if you actually believe she passed on it in the first place. It could also have been a total backfire too. Sometimes the games work - click here for the reference article on how celebrities “announce” their own roles as a way to push out the competition - and sometimes the people they’re playing games with simply don’t give a sh-t.
