Alice in Wonderland won’t be released until May 2010 – too long! – but Tim Burton has been showing footage to the press, in San Diego for Comic-Con and the studio will also be giving sneak peek clips and set pieces to journalists across North America in the coming weeks. Laura’s heading to a session next month. Will write about her observations when it happens.
So at the Alice panel yesterday, as the Q&A came to end, Tim Burton starts talking about his “imaginary friend” and of course everyone knew who he was referring to and then pandemonium as Johnny Depp walks on stage to support his friend. They’ve been tight, personally and professionally, for years. They’ve created magic in movies together many times, and even though Johnny usually stays away from events like these, and is the most authentically private of superstars, Johnny knew it meant a great deal to Tim, and so he showed up in solidarity. And again, for those who keep asking, this is why Johnny will NEVER be on the Freebie 5. Because you’d have to be crazy like a Twi-Hard to only want Johnny for just one night.
He didn’t stay long and he didn’t say much but it was enough. And then he was gone. But they say he could still be lurking. Heads up San Diego. Johnny is stealth.
