Look, any time there are new Robert Downey Jr photos, I will always try to post them, even if there’s nothing to say beyond...I love him so much.

Today, though, there are new RDJ photos AND there’s something new to say. Or, rather, it’s what Joss Whedon has to say. Whedon is working on The Avengers 2. As you know, there’s been some speculation that Marvel may no longer be able to afford RDJ, given that the other cast members may be asking for more cash money. Click here for Sarah’s article about the situation last month. Whedon was asked about how the contract negotiations might impact the sequel, and what would happen if RDJ and Marvel can’t come to terms. He told The Daily Beast that:

"He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making ‘Avengers 2' without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don't think it's in my interest, Marvel's interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine."

Sounds like RDJ will be back, non?

But you have to love Joss Whedon, you really do. Because Joss Whedon loves RDJ but he also loves heroines. This is why Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was more than just tits in The Avengers. And he intends on continuing to give women a presence in The Avengers 2:

“Toymakers will tell you they won't sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, You see? It can’t be done. It’s stupid, and I’m hoping ‘The Hunger Games’ will lead to a paradigm shift. It's frustrating to me that I don't see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched 'The Avengers' and was like, 'My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,' and I thought, Yeah, of course they were."

Apparently the new female character they’ll introduce in The Avengers 2 is the Scarlet Witch. You know what that means:

Casting speculation.

Jessica Biel is going to be all over this.
