Pipsqueak’s D!ck in a Box
Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Christopher Walken, Ben Affleck– a few members of an exclusive club of repeat hosts on Saturday Night Live so popular with audiences and with Lorne Michaels that they are always welcome back and they always come back, year after year, for many years, to build an impressively hilarious library of classics that will now surprisingly include Justin Timberlake.
This weekend, from start to finish, JT was comedic gold. And again – I’m not his biggest fan. But you don’t have to be his biggest fan to appreciate that it was without a doubt the funniest episode of the season, kicked off with a brilliantly ironic – and Pipsqueak! – rendition of Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas Song, and cemented by a sketch that will undoubtedly reach legendary status…no exaggeration whatsoever.
D!ck in a Box - an SNL-style music video, most of the writing credit probably goes to Andy Samberg (quickly emerging as the new Sandler/Fallon), in which Andy and JT sing about the perfect gift. Not a diamond or strand of pearls, not car or a house, but a cock in box perfect for every occasion.
Watch it here if you haven’t seen it. seriously, you will lose your sh-t. And not just for the easy juvenile laughs but for the small, keenly observed details, especially if you were around in the late 80s/early 90s, in the days of New Jack and Color Me Badd: the coif, the cheap cheese suits, the trimmed facial hair, the part when Justin whirls himself around that tree, the dance moves, and the lyrics…the lyrics will send you over the edge…
Can you believe what we used to accept back then?
And please. Don’t lie. I KNOW you still know it. I know you can still hear it in your head: Tick Tock Ya Don’t Stop, I Wanna Sex You Up, brilliantly satirized now by the unlikeliest of satirists…
Well played Pipsqueak…well played.
