In case you haven"t heard Keith Urban has announced he"s checked into rehab, just one week after the National Enquirer broke the story that he cheated on Nicole Kidman with a porn star 3 months before they were married. His statement was as follows: "I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones that love and support me. One can never let one"s guard down on recovery and I"m afraid that I have. With the strength and unwavering support I am blessed to have from my wife, family and friends, I am determined and resolved to a positive outcome." If you"ve been reading my column for a while, this should not surprise you. And word out of Nashville is that he"s been spiralling for some time, exacerbated by the current infidelity scandal and the pressure to go beyond "country" for his new release. Here is a summary of the rumours I"ve been hearing all morning/afternoon: - it is reported by Us Weekly to be alcohol but there have been suggestions of harder happy. Allegedly. - Keith was apparently floored when the story broke last week. He was not expecting it and he took it very badly. - everyone in Nashville is whispering that there are more women, that the National Enquirer has more to tell, that this is just the first attempt at damage control for at least 2 more bombshells that will break in the coming weeks - there are also rumours that he has been despondent over negative feedback for the album. Many in country music have deemed it a departure from country and are not supportive of his ambition to become more than just a country musician. This, combined with what"s been perceived as a dwindling fanbase has weighed on him heavily, to say nothing of the violent opposition from many of his longtime fans regarding his marriage to Nicole Kidman - two sources I spoke with this afternoon claim that Nicole is now in control. Her people are rumoured to be strategising on next moves and with the exception of one or two members of Keith"s personal entourage, Nashville has been virtually locked out of the situation…allegedly. - response in Nashville has been sadness and disappointment, but not surprise. As I"ve been telling you, Keith"s new image that came along with his new wife has not been welcome in a town where pappies are a rarity. As a result, many are blaming her for the slide. - then there are the conspiracy theorists. You know that famous "contract", that rumoured document with a relapse clause? Now the theory is that she"s putting her escape plan in motion, and on the eve of the TomKat wedding, is positioning herself as a victim…new movie, broken heart, Oscar, blah blah blah. Obviously this is all conjecture, you take it however you want it. But I thought you"d like to know what Nashville is buzzing about. Will keep digging, will keep you posted.
