The case against Les Miserables
Doug Meszler /Splash News
Many of you have emailed to fret about some of the reviews. Les Miserables is currently sitting at 72% on Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on Metacritic which doesn’t suck, no, but there have indeed been certain critics who’ve been vicious in their disdain: it’s so melodramatic, and amateurishly so; there are too many close-up shots when people are singing; there is too much singing. Eddie Redmayne’s great suit
WENN
It’s a gorgeous suit. It’s a beautiful colour. And he wears it so well. I interviewed Eddie Redmayne at the Les Miserables junket last weekend in New York. He is very, very nice. Doesn’t take himself too seriously, is engaging and friendly, seems kind and humble. It’s hard to not to be happy for him that he has the opportunity in this film to showcase his talent and variety and the best part about that is that, unlike some of his peers, he’s not self-conscious about the role. Les Miserables: an underdog?

The new issue of The Hollywood Reporter features Les Miserables -- its film history, the journey of this particular iteration under the direction of Tom Hooper, the production, and the cast. The story that’s told, at least at the beginning of the article, Nate Silver reference notwithstanding, is that this was always a risk. Full Story
Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean

As mentioned yesterday, I screened Les Miserables in New York on the weekend but reviews are embargoed until closer to the release date. We are allowed however to post reaction to the film. My reaction is that I ugly-cried HARD. And that I love Hugh Jackman. People keep talking about how much weight Anne Hathaway lost to play Fantine. Full Story

At the premiere of my favourite movie of the year in Tokyo tonight as they make their way around the world, closer and closer to Christmas Day, as we wait impatiently ... At The Barricade! And then en route to Hollywood & Highland, the Dolby Theatre to fight it out with Argo and Lincoln. Since its screenings last weekend, according to expert “Oscarologist” predictions, Les Miserables has moved ahead of Argo and Lincoln. Full Story
Les Miserables Vogue
And here we are, another year of American Vogue covers, and none of them featured Victoria Beckham. Anne Hathaway is December, understandably. She is Wintour-approved, and Valentino-approved, and she is the star of one of the most highly anticipated movies of the season, my favourite movie of the year, Les Miserables, which just happens to open at Christmas. The Cambridges return to the birthplace of their love

St Andrews! It’s so lovely, St Andrews. We were there for 3 days last year to shoot pre-footage in advance of the royal wedding. When I came home I told Jacek we should live there for a while -- the dogs would love it, he could golf every day, and I’d eat haggis all the time. It’s a life goal. Full Story
Everybody sings!
Duana left early this morning for a meeting and then I rushed off to the airport to come to New York so... We didn’t get to watch this new Les Miserables trailer together holding hands! We didn’t get to watch this new Les Miserables trailer together and cry! This time they all sing. Full Story
Les Miserables on Election Night
Two new tv spots were released yesterday for Les Miserables, my favourite movie of the year. I already know it will be. I know I will love it. There is no way I won’t love it. The clips were broadcast across several networks during election coverage. Anyway, obviously, I cried during both. Full Story
Les Miserables: the posters
Four new posters for the upcoming Les Miserables -- THE MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON (Hobbit what?) -- have been released but... and you know how much I love Les Miserables ... I hate them. Hate the cheesy tag lines even if they’re germane to the story (Heart Full Of Love on a poster, I don’t care how hard you try to argue it, is never not eye-rolly) and hate especially how glossy the women are. At this rate we should see something soon then from Anna Karenina. So... how’s our list looking so far? In no particular order: The MasterAnna KareninaGatsbyDjango UnchainedLincolnLife Of Pi .
