It’s not such a surprise to have someone wear a gold column dress. Someone wears one every couple of awards shows—at the Golden Globes or SAG awards as well as the Oscars—and they have their place. They’re beautiful and they’re of course evocative of the statues that we’re spending the whole night obsessing over. Nothing wrong with them, but I don’t think they’re that memorable either.
But sometimes when someone like Margot Robbie wears a spectacular Tom Ford gold column and you’ve just finished seeing her in The Big Short realizing the moment she showed up was the moment you fell in love with the movie, you realize with resignation that you probably might like this person now and the whole thing crystallizes into a general uptick for the night.
