Mariah Carey will be returning the million dollars she was paid to perform for Muammar Gaddafi.
"I was naïve and unaware of who I was booked to perform for. I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess. Going forward, this is a lesson for all artists to learn from. We need to be more aware and take more responsibility regardless of who book our shows. Ultimately we as artists are to be held accountable."
I’m of two minds about situations like this. They give over their lives, you see. They put decisions in the hands of other people. In Mimi’s case, she can’t even, like, walk herself without assistance so you know, when it comes to her engagements, there’s a lot of disengagement that happens. All she sees is the paycheque, all they probably say to her is – hey can you do Hero and Without You and Always Be My Baby and try not to fall for a million dollars?
Of course she’s going to say yes.
But the other side of it is that ultimately, no matter how famous you are, you should be responsible for KNOWING, right? You have to be the primary caretaker of your reputation, right? And as stars get younger, or as they start mining from the basest demographics to create new ones, ugh, it’s only going to get worse, they’re only going to get more stupid, they’ll only become even more incapable.
Anyway, the point is, Mimi’s out a million dollars. And her “Pink & Blue” baby shower is this Sunday. Looking at the gift registry then, presumably she’s too poor to buy her own twin sh-t.
Too Fab has some of the items that include bedding for $2,000 and a toy giraffe for $1200. Imagine? I would have to sell my car if I were invited to this event, just to be able to afford to bring a present. Two presents!
Look, I get a little uncomfortable about real people wedding and gift registries. There are people I know who actually intend to “make money” from their weddings. It’s kinda gross. And if that is gross for a civilian, it’s even more gross for a celebrity, non?
