Tits out, ass out, Mimi heaved her cheese onto the carpet the other night at the New York premiere of Precious enveloped in a cloud of butterfly love and bunny rabbit affection. Mimi tottered over to the event wrapped around her husband Nick Cannon and the two proceeded to slather the press with a thick layer of Velveeta as Mimi, in exceptionally great spirits, perhaps due to the fact that Mo’Nique has decided to piss away her Best Supporting Actress nomination chances, is deluding herself that there’s actually a possibility. This must be why her gorgonzola is extra pungent.
Needless to say, Mo’Nique did not show.
But Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz did. And of course the irresistible Gabourey Sidibe in purple and the sweetest smile you’ll ever see. She was so charming and so articulate and so infectiously enthusiastic at TIFF and this on top of the electrifying performance she delivers as Precious, everyone loves Gabby.
I have a friend, we’ll call her MC, and she’s a little fragile right now, understandably, and she asked … should I see Precious? I told her – right now, probably not a good idea. But you must eventually.
Precious is difficult to watch. It will stay with you for a long time. But it’s an important film. So important. As Owen Gleiberman at Entertainment Weekly wrote:
By the end you feel you’ve witnessed nothing less than the birth of a soul.
I have been doing this for months and I’ll keep at it just to make sure it’s not missed. The Precious trailer is below. Please watch.
And a note on Sapphire if you haven’t read her work – she was at TIFF for the premiere too and also participated at a speaker session at Yonge & Dundas. They were intimidated at first…and then she came, so nice, so accommodating, so humble. Girlcrushes all around.
