So many films did not meet critical and box office expectations this season. The Martian, however, delivered. You might say it over-delivered. Three months ago, no one was calling it an Oscar frontrunner. Now? The Martian is Ridley Scott’s most well-reviewed film. And it’s on track to make more money than Gladiator. You know Gladiator won Best Picture, right? The star of Gladiator, Russell Crowe, won Best Actor.

And the star of The Martian?

Many believe that Matt Damon’s performance in The Martian is the finest of his career. And that since the film pretty much doesn’t happen without him, if The Martian goes the distance, so too should Matt Damon. At this point, it’s pretty much guaranteed that he’ll go to the Globes. As for Oscar, if it were up to me, it would be between The Martian and Spotlight. Spotlight has the critics. But it might not get the box office. And The Martian, like Argo a few years ago, had both. It would be shocking if The Martian doesn’t at least get a nomination. And The Revenant is going to have to seriously kill it, like critics pulling down their pants and masturbating during the film, for it to storm through the The Martian and Spotlight momentum.

Oh, hi Leo. Show us what you got. Because Matt Damon’s in your way. And he’s a pretty popular guy. Probably more popular than Matthew McConaughey, who took down Leo last time.

Here’s Matt in London with his wife at the Natural History Museum in London watching his kids skate.
