A new teaser trailer has been released for HBO’s Behind The Candelabra with Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon playing his lover Scott Thorson, directed by Steven Soderbergh. Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait to see this. May 26 in Canada and the US but Deadline is saying there could be a screening in Cannes.

And it sets up a competitive Emmy Awards, non?

Al Pacino will for sure receive a nomination for Phil Spector. And I can’t imagine they’d not include Douglas and Damon too. Needless to say, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will be all over that too for the Golden Globes in January. Behind The Candelabra was originally supposed to be a feature film but due to whatever politicking and difficulties in the movie business the film ended up at HBO instead, which probably allowed for less interference and more creative freedom. It’s yet another example of how the most interesting storytelling and production is moving over to television. And many of the industry’s biggest stars are following. Matt Damon’s film career is not on the decline. Matt Damon isn’t doing tv because his career is in the sh-ts. In all fairness, though he may not have been as inclined to take on the project without Soderbergh’s involvement and if it had started as a tv project to begin with, the fact that he stayed with it, and that it has ended up on television counts as another plus on the tv side of the tv or movies debate as the movies are increasingly being dominated by mindless explosions and all manner of dumbassery. Example: The Host.
