Deadpool 2 doesn’t have a set release date—a minor miracle these days, when movies are slated years in advance and rushed to meet predetermined deadlines—but it’s aiming for a 2018 release, which means it’s casting up right now. Atlanta’s Zazie Beetz is on tap to play Domino, and just now Variety is reporting that Michael “Zero F*cks” Shannon is the frontrunner to play Cable, the cyborg son of Cyclops with Professor X-level psychic skills. They’ve been teasing Cable since the post-credit scene on Deadpool, and nerds are very excited to have him on the big screen.
But “frontrunner” is a long way from “signed”, and other names in the Cable mix include Stranger Things and Winona Rider’s Wildest Imaginings star David Harbour. Collider mentioned Shannon a couple weeks ago, though at that time they cited “scheduling issues” keeping him out of the mix. With Variety on it now, it would seem something has changed in Shannon’s schedule and he’s back at the top of the list.
I like David Harbour and am glad for his Stranger Things-fueled success—he’s one of those dudes that everyone knows and has been around forever and it’s nice to see the work finally pay off—but I LOVE the idea of Michael Shannon as Cable. Specifically I love the idea of him in Deadpool, where neither he nor the character needs to be watered down for general audiences. Not every superhero movie should be rated R, but it’s nice to have the option for certain character/talent combos. Also, imagine the possibilities for his themed wardrobe during the press tour.
