I miss Michelle Williams. It’s been a quiet couple of years of her, by choice. Her last film, Suite Francaise, was released only in Europe, not in North America, though it was reasonably well received. I guess they just couldn’t find a distributor who thought that audiences over here would be into it? We’re cultural pigs, basically.
She’s one of the best though, Michelle Williams. And she’s obviously being selective about her work. So, hopefully, we’ll see her next year in Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-By-The-Sea with Casey Affleck. He plays a "lazy and irresponsible Boston plumber forced to return home to the titular town after he learns his brother passed away. Suddenly he finds himself having to take care of his brother's 16-year old son but also finds himself crumbling due to a secret tragedy in his past." Michelle is his estranged wife. They were trying to work out a deal in Cannes back in May, though I haven’t heard an update since. Lonergan is talented. You know his work if you’ve seen You Can Count On Me. God I love that movie. But very few people saw it when they were supposed to see it. I wonder if the same thing will happen here.
Still, that doesn’t diminish Michelle’s reputation. And I love that she’s not trying to force anything either. Michelle Williams will win an Oscar. It’s a matter of time.
Here she is at the InStyle Awards last night repping Nicholas Ghesquiere and Louis Vuitton. I don’t love these bangs but those boots, my God, those boots.
