Most Disappointing: Naomi Watts
There’s this dude from Australia who has written me on occasion, some 50 year old Naomi Watts super-fan, and I think he runs a fan club, with a catalogue of her fashion past, with indepth knowledge (I’m talking IN DEPTH) of every dress she’s ever worn, all the colours she’s experimented with, and who clearly takes the position that Naomi Watts is one of the most creative and stylish celebrities we should be watching.
Needless to say, I think he’s a little biased. And I think Naomi’s rather disastrous choice tonight supports my case. Never mind that it’s a mess of shred and tulle, never mind that the colour absolutely washes her out, never mind that she’s actually rather ordinary. Never mind all that. The most insulting thing about this dress is that it doesn’t fit properly. And it bunches up in awkward areas around her stomach. And for someone who used to be some kind of style editor – as pointed out so strenuously by Mr SuperFan himself – how can you forgive such a gross fashion misconduct?
I can appreciate that Naomi was trying to be avantegarde. I can appreciate that she was taking a style risk. I applaud for her doing so. But the bigger the risk, the greater the consequence. And so far, I haven’t heard from anyone who approves of her terrible taupe.
