I apologise. I realise this means nothing if you haven’t read The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. But if you haven’t read it, you really should. Because even though it is a stellar cast, you never know what Hollywood’s bound to do to a book adaptation, no matter how tried and true the subject matter. A monarch, his lovers, his elegant first wife, who used to be married to his dead older brother, who cannot give him a boy, who stands by while he gooses a luscious young (and we’re talking YOUNG) blonde, who is in turn commanded by her family to step aside for her sister, who plots her way to the throne, but who is also unsuccessful at the heir delivery, who resorts to sleeping with her brother to produce a demon, who is then discovered, and then beheaded, but not before producing her greatest accomplishment - Elizabeth the First, daughter of Anne Boleyn, who cheekily quipped before her execution: "I heard say that the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck." What beats historical fiction for pure smutty drama? Can’t frickin’ wait!!! Shooting just started, Scarlett Johansson as milky Mary Boleyn, Natalie Portman as the scheming Anne – perfectly cast, as attached, in sharp contrast to Eric Bana playing Henry VIII. Sorry…I just can’t see it. Nor can I see this fellow, Eddie Redmayne as the hunk of horse-riding hotness William Stafford…. Really??? William Stafford was a Nelly? Photo source
