I’m going to go ahead and put a SPOILER warning on this, even though I don’t think anything released by a movie studio as part of marketing counts as a spoiler. But I get tired of spoiler babies crying in my inbox, so SPOILERS, if you’re trying to avoid any and everything relating to New New Star Wars.
A new teaser/clip/thing was posted to the official Star Wars Instagram. Some of it was footage included in the previous trailers, but there’s a close-up look at Daisy Ridley’s Rey making a mildly constipated face, as well as the adorable BB-8 ball droid that is sure to be a popular toy this holiday season. We also get a nice look at the practical but stylish culottes worn by First Order flaks:
But what really has everyone in a tizzy is that we now know who Adam Driver’s bad-guy Kylo Ren is fighting in the snow—John Boyega as Finn, who at least begins the movie as a Stormtrooper. There are so many rumors and sketchy reports about what is going on in Episode VII, but one consistent plot detail is that Finn and Rey find a lightsaber, the one Luke Skywalker lost in Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back. That would be the lightsaber Anakin Skywalker made before going full-bad guy—the lightsaber in Finn’s hands in this clip. It’s beautiful and so, so blue, which may just be the result of improved coloration technology (OG Star Wars struggled with this then-new tech), or maybe we’re about to learn some new Jedi lore about how specific users influence lightsabers? I’d be into that. I am DEFINITELY into self-styled faux-Sith Kylo Ren and his homemade broadsword lightsaber taking on a maybe-reformed Stormtrooper armed with Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber. Which is one of the nerdiest things I’ve ever said.
