It’s a fashion scandal…and a mystery!
Olivia Wilde was at the Met Gala with Gabriela Hearst, creative director of Chloé, which of course is a fashion house that also has ties to Karl Lagerfeld.
Both Olivia and Gabriela were wearing pieces inspired by Karl’s 1983 Chloé collection.
But they weren’t the only ones inspired by that collection. Because Margaret Zhang, editor-in-chief of Vogue China, also showed up in the violin dress. It wasn’t designed by Gabriela Hearst, the hem on Margaret’s is different, and she added a cape. But still. STILL.
Howwwwww does this happen on Anna Wintour’s watch?! Given Karl’s past with Chloé, I would imagine that Anna would have been given a heads up about who was wearing what… so if she was out of the loop on anything it would have been on the Vogue China side. Which tells me that Anna isn’t checking in with Vogue China even though her title is “global editorial director” or that the Vogue China people don’t bow down to Anna.
Anyway, I wonder if we’ll ever find out what happened, and it’s not Olivia who would have the answer because she wouldn’t have been overseeing any of these design decisions. She changed out of the violin dress for the afterparty into a mesh look with black underwear and boots…and I actually prefer this look over the carpet violin.
Let’s move from musical instruments to pearls because it was a lot of f-cking pearls. And there were three pearl looks that were super samesy to me. As in the pearl strands as the major feature of the dress. I’ll start with the best: Amanda Seyfried. I know they’re not pearls, but it’s that effect.
The pearls were real on Serena Williams though and that was the main feature of the look. Or, rather, it was supposed to be the main feature until she announced she’s pregnant, she and Alexis Ohanian are expecting their second child.
And the worse pearl strands? Kim Kardashian in Schiaparelli. To me it looked like when kids make necklaces out of macaroni or whatever – janky AF, and the pearls were falling off so it all got cheaper and cheaper throughout the night. A mess. And yes I’ve seen all the noise online comparing her Met Gala look with her Playboy look which is also embarrassing because why are you doing a look you’ve already done. Rihanna would never!
