Oscars 2019 Articles
2019 Academy Awards (Oscars) hilights, gossip, photos, and video.
Dear Gossips,
Yesterday in this space, I wrote about the hierarchy of Oscar parties, how the Vanity Fair party has become the appetiser instead of the main course, and former VF editor Graydon Carter’s Importance Index and Seven Room theories of fame. Read Full Intro
Bradley, Gaga, Irina: a new triangle?

Oh my God, please, can this stop? As you know, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga performed “Shallow” at the Oscars, directed by Bradley Cooper. This is an important point, because people seem to have lost their goddamn minds about their chemistry and how undeniable it is that they’re in “true love” when all of it was completely produced. Dear Gossips,
As we usually do, Duana, Kathleen, and I watched the Oscars together and at no point, as we usually do during award shows, did we say to each other… what? We’re only at XYZ category? It’s only been an hour? The Oscars went by quickly and I’m still trying to decide whether or not that’s a good thing. Read Full Intro
Awkwafina: Oscar Best Dressed (Duana)

I loved this the moment I saw it, and then it grew on me from there. It was kitschy! It was sparkly! It was totally Awkwafina, and also not like anything we’d seen her wear before – or, if it is, it feels new, and that’s part of it. I remember thinking last night how lucky it was that Awkwafina didn’t happen to wind up in the trend of pinks. Full Story
Lady Gaga: Oscar Worst Dressed (Duana)

Yes, it is glamourous. Some would say it’s a 7-year-old girl’s version of glamorous, what with the long gloves, but let’s not quibble. Yes, it is ‘appropriate’ to win your first Oscar in, as proven. Yes, it is slightly more unusual because it has the black ‘hips’ on it. Full Story
Julia Roberts: Oscar Worst Dressed (Kathleen)

Whatever Julia Roberts’ equivalent of the Beygency is, Duana is its president. Duana and her Best Friend’s Wedding Party (I just made this up since Duana says Julia stans are too old for a fan nickname) will want to come for me based on the headline of this post alone. OK, bring it. I can handle it. Full Story
Charlize Theron: Oscar Worst Dressed (Lainey)

It’s because her bar is so high. Like, was Charlize Theron’s dress as bad as, say, Kacey Musgraves’s? Well, no. But also they’re not playing on the same field, at least not yet. Kacey’s still getting to her style level. Charlize is at the top already. So a dress like this, by her established standard, is a disappointment. Full Story
Amandla Stenberg: Oscar Best Dressed (Kathleen)

The Oscars took my advice on one of my past pet peeves of the show. There weren’t endless montages featuring movies that the show didn’t recognize. It’s annoying when the Academy snubs great films for ones like Green Book but then will cycle through the good ones in a fleeting montage. Full Story
Jason Momoa & Lisa Bonet: Oscar Best Dressed (Lainey)

Probably they could have worn anything and been Best Dressed, right? I just don’t see how it’s possible for Lisa Bonet to show up at the Oscars and not claim one of the Best Dressed spots. This woman’s fashion influence on what we’ve been wearing for the last 25 years cannot be overstated. Full Story
Chadwick Boseman Knows What Oscar Wants

Everyone on social media is using the same picture of Chadwick Boseman on the red carpet, in front of that weird corridor-photo wall they had this year. It’s this one: Full Story
What’s In JLo’s Oscar Mirror?

Let’s get one thing very, very clear here. Jennifer Lopez looked stunnnning last night. It’s not just that she’s beautiful, which she is – but that dress is a treat for the eyes. I never, ever got tired of looking at it, from every multi-faceted angle, which of course is the point but also because a lot of the dresses worn to the Oscars are designed to be analyzed and debated and seen as an indication of the wearer’s confidence in winning or not, and I know we do some of that here, and I know we all enjoy it – after all, fashion is expression and art – but when so many dresses are taken so seriously, it’s a joy to see one that’s a little more lighthearted, a bit more playful.
