What’s the Katniss equivalent for the boys? Has to be Jason Bourne in Tony Gilroy’s Bourne Legacy. Everyone is said to be gunning for it – Jakey, Josh Hartnett (well there’s a long lost name!), Pettyfer…and Shia LaBeouf who I hear may have the best shot, though we’re certainly not as close here as we are for The Hunger Games.
Chances are slim but you know who my pick would be?
Paul Dano.
Yeah Lorella, I can hear you. You think he’s ugly. Most of you probably think he’s ugly. Why not an unconventional looking lead actor? Besides, he’s supposed to be a spy. He’s not supposed to be a supermodel. And the thing about Paul Dano is that he can throw down with any actor on any list with him and probably win. Besides, you become so attached to a person’s looks, you forget that this industry is about transformation. Most of you can’t get past Jennifer Lawrence on the carpet at the Oscars but have you seen her in Winter’s Bone? Not even the same person.
Anyway, it’s lonely over here but I’m with Paul.
Here he is in New York yesterday shooting Another Bullsh-t Night in Suck City, the movie adaptation of Nick Flynn’s awesome memoir. Have you read it? I read it when I was working at Covenant House Vancouver. So many parts hit too close to home. About life on the streets. About the community of life on the streets. And how the cycle can seem unbreakable.
What a cast too. Robert DeNiro will play the homeless father, Dano his son who flirts with that reality himself, adorable Olivia Thirlby is his love interest, and Julianne Moore has a part but it’s not been confirmed exactly what. If you haven’t already, the book is great. It’s hard, but it’s great.
