Everyone noted she was over it at the Spirit Awards on Saturday. She’s probably been over it for weeks, if not months. Because SHE IS 9. And 9 year old girls should not be campaigning for Oscar.

The Spirit Awards press line was LONG. Poor thing, by the time she’d completed maybe a third of the interviews, she was turning to her publicist and pleading to stop. The publicist would gently nudge her to keep going. By the time she was close to my area, she was answering every question with:

I have no idea.

And no smiles.

Are you excited for the Oscars, Q?

I have no idea.

Will you have any family there?

I have no idea.

Do you like trying on dresses?

I have no idea.

It was her way of fighting back. She had nothing left.

This wasn’t easy to watch. And especially not when two family types were standing behind her, not interfering.

But, you know, it’s all paid off.

Quvenzhane Wallis is now the new Annie. And she’ll be working with Will and Jada Smith and Jay-Z. So, you know, by the time that movie comes out, she’ll be two years older, and they’ll have programmed the petulance out of her.
