Deadline’s Nikki Finke posted an engrossingly thorough report yesterday about negotiations for The Avengers 2. It’s a great article about the business of movies, and celebrities. You can click here to read it. In short, Marvel is cheap. And they don’t want to give the actors a pay rise even though The Avengers owned the 2012 box office, and even The Dark Knight. Marvel was already unhappy, as Robert Downey Jr confirmed in his GQ interview, that he made over $50 million from the film. Obviously to bring him back, they’ll have to give him more. I wrote about that here last week.
According to Finke though, RDJ isn’t just out for himself. He’s apparently the Big Brother to all the other superheroes too:
“...the Avengers cast are becoming united behind Robert Downey Jr who is seen as the “leader” – like “a big brother” in the words of one rep - for all the younger actors in the ensemble. “He’s the only guy with real power in this situation. and balls of steel, too. He’s already sent a message that he’s not going to work for a place where they treat his colleagues like sh-t,” one source explains. Another rep tells me, “I have four words for Marvel – ‘F-ck you, call Robert.’”
Let’s be mindful of the fact that he’s probably $100 million, at least, richer off of Tony Stark and it’s probably not hard to be ballsy when you have that much cash money sitting around. Can’t you just take a few million less to reward the fans with a great sequel? OK, now that we’ve done that, we can fangirl over how awesome he continues to be.
He was awesome on Friday when he made a surprise appearance at the Inventor and Innovator Fair in LA to honour what he called the “true innovators” and the “future design team of the next Tony Stark Iron Man suit”. Click here for more about RDJ with the students.
And here’s RDJ with his wife Susan holding on to his now infamous vitamin lunchbox leaving dinner the other night in Beverly Hills.
