Hi Dad! And Good Luck Robert Pattinson

My dad reads the open of my site every day. And usually heΓÇÖll see the top few articles. What does my dad have to do with Robert Pattinson?

The red symbol on PattinsonΓÇÖs jacket - in Cantonese itΓÇÖs pronounced ΓÇ£FOKΓÇ¥, in Mandarin ΓÇ£FUΓÇ¥, and thatΓÇÖs dadΓÇÖs name. Means Good Luck. ThatΓÇÖs why you see the character so much on Chinese calendars.

I apologise in advance if I offend you if this applies to you but, um, generally...IΓÇÖm not really down with people who get Chinese letter tattoos. Chinese people of my motherΓÇÖs generation look down on tattoos socially as theyΓÇÖve been associated so much with triads. But, you know, beyond that, think of the people you see most often with Chinese letter tattoos. RIGHT?

Not sure if Robert Pattinson is one of those. My sense is he isnΓÇÖt, though IΓÇÖm not sure why heΓÇÖs walking around wearing a jacket with Chinese lettering and dragons that also appears to an English language ode to those who served in the Vietnam War. ThatΓÇÖs a lot of, um, mixed messaging; thatΓÇÖs a very Chinese symbol. China and Vietnam arenΓÇÖt exactly best friends right now. And I donΓÇÖt even know whatΓÇÖs up with the writing.

When I die IΓÇÖll go to heaven because IΓÇÖve spent my time in hell

First time I saw this it was a Zippo lighter. ItΓÇÖs becoming a collector item now, the engraved Zippos soldiers used to carry with them in war (click here to see a few), artifacts of a cruel time that often represented the resentment and confusion of the era in a dozen words or less on a small piece of metal.

But I do hope heΓÇÖs not the kind of person who buys sh-t he doesnΓÇÖt understand just because it looks cool. IΓÇÖd like to think he puts more thought into these matters than the young fools who walk around with Che Guevara on their chests because it looks good on a t-shirt.

Pattinson is at the Berlinale promoting his new film Bel Ami with Christina Ricci.
