Hey Sasha!  I'm a 20-year-old college student who interns part time at a film/talent/model agency. I asked my boss if I could be reimbursed for my gas and valet tickets and he said of course. (I wouldn't have accrued those gas costs or valet tickets if it weren't for the tasks my boss gave me to do). The night before this big event we had, he even told me that he already had a $200 check ready for me. Pretty sure he was a little tipsy when he told me, but I still don't know if it was for real or not.

I live a comfortable lifestyle, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't get the money, but at the same time it would be nice to have so I can start to pay my parents back for all the necessities they generously give me. At the same time, I don't want to come off as being entitled or rude to my boss. What should I do? Thanks! C

Your boss needs to make it rain on your ass!  You should absolutely follow up with him and get him to pay up.

If it was only a few dollars then you could let it slide, but 2 bills is a significant chunk of change. The bigger message here though is that you’re entering the serious career woman phase in your life and you shouldn’t be setting any precedents at work that allow you to be taken advantage of.  Ya dig?

Now my sense is that your boss isn’t dicking you around; I think it was simply a case of him forgetting, so don’t stress out. Just poke your head into his office this week and say “hey, just checking in to see if I could get reimbursed for my expenses. Would love to get that all settled up – the holidays really put me in the hole” or something like that.

No harm no foul.  It’s your money and you are entitled to get it back.
