Despite current internal strife over strike authorisation, the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced today, most of it lining up as expected but for one or two surprises.

Leonardo DiCaprio for Revolutionary Road was left off the ballot in favour of Brad Pitt. Most seemed to predict that Brad’s film Benjamin Button would take precedence over his individual acting achievement. Obviously not. Will be interesting then to see how this shakes out for Oscar…

And the Best Actress race became murkier too…

Because Sally Hawkins in Happy Go Lucky was considered a lock – as longtime reader Ritchie P pointed out, she was singled out by both by the LA and NY film critics, always a harbinger for an eventual Academy Award. But the fact that she failed to receive even a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild? Looks like this race is tighter than ever. And yes…

The Brange is now represented both at the Globes and at the SAGs in both acting categories. Everyone wants ratings, see?

Kate Winslet continues to double – lead and supporting nominations for Revolutionary Road and The Reader respectively.

And…

Slumdog Millionaire!!!!

Dev Patel was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the cast for Outstanding Performance!

The SAGs are usually very accurate prognosticators for Oscar.

Have you seen Slumdog yet? See it over the holidays. You will love. Promise.
