Sean Penn is killing it in Cannes today. Check him out working denim on denim, posing with some hip-jutting attitude at the photo call for This Must Be The Place. He plays Cheyenne, an aging goth rocker looking for the Nazi who tortured his dad. I want you to watch this clip before reading the rest.

Ok so Frances McDormand? She plays his WIFE, a firefighter in Dublin, in the film. This… cracks me up. Reviews are mixed. Some think Penn’s performance is funny, sweet, silly, and nomination worthy. Others are like, um, WTF? Not so much at him but at the imbalance between him taking it way too seriously, and the director’s perceived indecision about what this film should be. Or is. A satire? Or sensitively for real?

Whatever. Scarlett probably thinks it’s brilliant. This is why she doesn’t mind his bad hair, his Canadian tuxedo – oh because he’s an “artist”, he’s so profound, he makes her think, he challenges her, he needs to be understood, and only the few can reach that part of him.

You know, he doesn’t seem to be missing her a whole lot while he’s been here. Penn parties HARD when in Cannes. While he was still married to Robin Wright, he would roll up to the club with a lady on each arm at like 4am. And that was the year he was the Jury President. Last night Sean hit up AMFAR and was in really, really great spirits. Like actually smiling with photographers around. And being introduced to a lot of models and rich Euros and their wives/mistresses.

Anyway, that’s Eve Hewson in the photos, Bono’s daughter. Cute right?
