This cuteness… it’s killing me.

I was the first to tell you about Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez last week – now more exclusive details about their adorable weekend date.

Saturday night: they had dinner at the Cactus Club in Coquitlam, emerged in great spirits, both with big smiles on their faces, Selena held on to Taylor’s arm. At one point, after they had become separated and she fell behind to sign autographs, she ran back up to join him, throwing her arms around his neck, both bursting into giggles.

It is just So.Sweet.

So sweet I almost feel maternal. The way I feel when my dog and his best friend Kona go on a ball chaser and play really nicely together, sharing and not fighting. The difference of course is that Marcus doesn’t talk back to me. Or wail on a plane.

Am writing this on my flight home from Toronto. Am seated directly beside a woman, her child, and the grandma. The baby girl is maybe 18 months? She won’t sit still. I understand this. I try to remember she’s excited and it is impossible to expect her not to want to move around while trapped in such a small space. I try not to glare at it when it slips by accident, leans forward to balance, and smears chocolate from her fingers all over my leather jacket and my laptop screen eliciting a halfhearted apology from the mother. I try not to exhale and express my frustration when the mother and her mother engage in an uninterrupted stream of observational chatter – baby is so full of energy today! baby you want cookie? Check baby’s diaper. Baby’s hair is growing in at the back. How did this stain get on baby’s tights? Does baby want to watch a movie? Woof woof – baby look at the doggy! Baby don’t press the button. OK, but don’t press it too hard. Gentle, gentle! Baby, do you see grandma? Where’s grandma? Baby say mama. Maaaa…maaaa. Good baby!

I try very hard and so far I’ve been successful. I have put on my headphones. Caleb Followill is helping me. And when baby starts screaming because she’s so tired, and I can’t blame her, she does seem exhausted, I crank up the volume to drown her out and I am still trying because I know there’s only an hour left and ultimately I don’t have to take it home. So I try. And I keep trying, just like I try every time I fly.

But it would be nice. Family flights and non family flights would be nice.

As for Selena and Taylor – they were supposed to be heading for a movie after they ate. Am so relieved that teenagers still do this.
