Here’s my favourite tweet from yesterday:
In case you missed it, I am obsessed with Simone Biles. And it’s not just because I’m obsessed with gymnasts and she just might be the best gymnast ever, of all time. But also because I’m obsessed with Teen Life. And that tweet right there is Teen Life. Right now, though, it’s the most extraordinary teen life. She’s fangirling in Rio over Usain Bolt. But she herself, alongside Usain, is probably one of top 5 Olympians this year on the hype list. She might actually be getting even more attention than Usain.
For Simone it’s a specifically unique version of teen life. Because several years ago she decided that gymnastics was so important to her that she switched out of high school for homeschooling instead, as regular school wouldn’t allow for the amount of time she’d have to miss for practice and competitions. So she missed hanging out at the lockers. She missed the dances. She missed the football games. She missed the highs and lows of lunchtime cafeteria drama. So I wonder, now that Simone is at the Olympics, surrounded by thousands of athletes from other countries, whether or not Rio will be a two week crash course in conventional high school…where she gets to sit next to Usain Bolt at dinner in the athletes’ cafeteria, where the opening ceremony will be like the senior assembly, and the closing ceremony is the prom?
The opening ceremony is tomorrow night. Simone’s first day of competition is Sunday. Needless to say, I’ve been compulsively reading every article there is about her as we get closer and closer to her debut. Yesterday The Bleacher Report published a piece framed around Simone’s relationship to her mother, Nellie. You’re going to be hearing a lot more about Simone Biles over the next couple of weeks. If you haven’t met her yet, this is a great introduction.
