Today’s challenge is going to help you stick to all of the changes you are have tried to make year after year. There is a reason why most of us don’t stick to our resolutions and it is likely because we are trying to accomplish too much all at once. I’ll be honest with you, that’s why I never set resolutions for myself.

Start today by writing down one thing you want to improve this week as well as how you plan on making that improvement because it isn’t as easy as just saying you want to do something and then it magically gets done. For example, if you are hoping to exercise for at least 20 minutes every day then you need to sit down and figure out exactly when that will be each day. For the first few weeks, until this becomes a habit, you will need to plan for it, clear you schedule, and ask for help, such as child care, if needed. If you want to eat 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day then you need to get to the grocery store because fruits and vegetables will not just magically appear in your refrigerator. If your goal is to drink 2L of water each day, then it is a good idea to invest in a good quality water bottle.

Each week pick a new change, or goal, creating a plan for success with each. If you struggle with one change, give yourself an extra week to make it stick, or evaluate the change as it may be too much for you to accomplish at the moment. Some goals require more effort than others so be prepared to work hard. It is ok if you are not successful from the get-go but it is not ok to give up. We learn by failing so keep trying and re-evaluating until it sticks.

Over this next year hopefully each small change will result in one massive lifestyle change, but the beauty of accomplishing it one step at a time is you will figure out slowly what works for you and what doesn’t. If you run into a goal that is a struggle, you work on it until it is no longer. There is only one way to get to the top of the mountain and that is taking it one step at a time so start with your first step today.
