Smutty Fitness: When life changes, so do workouts
Backgrid
Being active has been a part of my life since I was a kid running around on the beaches of my hometown on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I have played community sports, school sports, high level club sports, university sports as well as competed in multiple triathlons, marathons, and cross-country mountain bike racing. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: What is your “handstand”?
Backgrid
There really is no better feeling than accomplishing something that you maybe didn’t think possible. We all have it, that feeling of self-doubt and that little voice in the back of our head that is constantly trying to tell us we can’t do something. Right now, that voice is telling me I will never be able to do a handstand. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: Spring eating and fitness
Backgrid
I had a discussion last week with colleagues of mine about fad diets, which began when one of my mentors suggested that I check out this new Paleo restaurant by our studio. He lost me at the word Paleo, and then another colleague piped up and said he stops listening when someone mentions Keto. I think the reason for this is because we are all in this industry to help people find love for themselves. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: Soreness
Backgrid
Hi Hayley, I'm writing for two reasons: First reason: when I work out I'm in a lot of pain after. I've had shin splints in the past and now get them touch and go. But I get really knotty calves from working out. I use my stress balls on my calves almost daily, as sometimes when they're really bad and it leads to back pain. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: Questions about Keto
Backgrid
Hi Hayley, Please get down and dirty with the whole trend of high fat, low carb dieting. It seems like everyone is on keto and raving about how they are losing weight while eating butter and I just can't wrap my head around it. I understand what ketosis is, but is it a legitimately safe long-term eating plan? I have a friend who does keto and hardcore intermittent fasting where she doesn't eat for 24 hours, twice a week, She swears by it and has lost a ton of weight, claims she has super energy, and actually smothers everything in butter. Smutty Fitness: A Captain Marvel-inspired workout
Marvel
So, I am a little late to the Captain Marvel party (finally just saw the movie) and it has me inspired to create an ass-kicking, strength-building workout to help pull out the superhero in all of us. I read Sarah’s review... Full Article
Smutty Fitness: Fitness your way
DIGGZY/ Splash News
A long-time childhood friend visited me this weekend and in a span of 3 days we managed 3 hikes, an ocean side 10km walk and an ocean kayak. She said it was the most exercise she has done in months (part of the job of being my friend I guess) and as we were driving her back to the airport she asked me what the best thing was that she could do for exercise when she gets home. Smutty Fitness: Bridesmaid (and Oscar) food and fitness plan
Backgrid
Hi Hayley, I love your column and am all about intentional fitness and doing it to feel good, rather than look a certain way. I don't have a scale in my house and instead just try to exercise regularly, eat mostly veggies, legumes and grains, and don't stress about alcohol or bread when I consume it. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: Maternity leave workout
ENT/ Splash News
Hi Hayley, I was hoping you could help me with a quick, effective routine to do while on maternity leave. I don’t have much equipment and am hoping to do mostly body weight stuff. I am 16 weeks postpartum. I had a C-section and have been cleared to resume normal exercise. I have access to: a spin bike at home (I’ve been doing a couple 20-30-minute classes/week via the peloton app), a couple exercise bands, as well as a 6 lb medicine ball and a pair of 8 lb weights. Smutty Fitness: Body image and acceptance
Bauer-Griffin/ Splash News
Hi Hayley, The question I'm about to ask you might be an impossible one for you to answer. Self-esteem is such an elusive thing to understand, and I know that! I'm going to try to explain where I'm coming from. Growing up, I didn't have real issues with self-esteem, at least that I was aware of. Full Article
Smutty Fitness: When you need a push
Backgrid
Hi Hayley, I am in my mid-thirties. After being very lax with exercise in the previous 4-5 years, I made time these past 9 months to get fit again, return to my previous clothing size, and lose the extra pounds gained primarily in the last couple years. I have met the first two goals and I feel that my current fitness base is in many ways, an improvement compared to my late twenties. Full Article
