February 3, 2011 – Smutty Shout-Outs

For Dennis who makes great steaks and who gave me Fiona, the dearest of friends. I signed the petition! Please click here to help preserve the mountain.

And Happy 30th Birthday Leigh-Ellen! I love 80s themed parties. Forget about the splotches, focus on the 55 POUNDS that aren’t there anymore – yay you! As for your cleaning situation – can you just clean the bathroom, like the toilet bowl and the sink, where people see, and nothing else? I mean, tell them it’s the Chinese thing. Will they put their judging on hold? I’ve attached a few Ryan Gosling pictures in your honour. Do you think he and Ben Affleck (at the Critics’ Choice Awards) are comparing notes on Blake Lively? For some reason, the shot of him with Marc Anthony and JLo cracks me up (at the Golden Globes). And I like the idea of him being a consummate party chatter, seen entertaining Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. But the way he’s holding Michelle Williams by the neck… hot, right?

Below… re: Chinese New Year and the Squawking Chicken’s lucky charm pockets – this is a note from Marion B who won a Tiger charm last year and wrote to me this week to let me know how it went. Her account is below.

Hi Lainey

I was one of the winners of the Year of the Tiger tokens, and I just wanted to let you know about the good year I've had. I've had the token safely tucked into my pillowcase ever since I received it.

In April I heard of a business for sale - not your idea of a good time - but my children's preschool came up for sale for a price that was too good to pass up. I still need preschool for my children for two more years, so it's a savings really! To take a further leap of faith, I chose to change the preschool to a Montessori preschool (the first in the area), in order to stand out from the rest. I opened the new Montessori preschool in September and have had an incredible response from the families here. I am the busiest preschool in town. I even have people waitlisted a year ahead of their start date in hopes of getting into my school. One family drives 35 km one-way, just to bring their child to my preschool. I have even got new families sign up after overhearing other mothers discuss the preschool during Pilates class!! After being a stay-at-home mother for 5 1/2 years, it's great to get my head back into business.

The only time I didn't have the token was when we were camping and my husband - trying to help - decided to keep it in a safe place, and stuff happened!!!!!! I lost my laptop, seriously, it disappeared off the face of the earth, and something serious happened at work (which I can't disclose due to legalities). As soon as I put the token back into my pillowcase, life got back on track. So much so, that the work issues were resolved quickly and without incident. I had miraculously done a time-machine backup on my old computer before I left on holiday, so I was able to buy a new laptop and with the time machine, restore all my information, bookmarks, emails etc, from my old computer onto the new one within minutes. A brilliant invention.

My latest piece of good fortune has been learning of a great building downtown to convert into my school house, which is up for sale but not yet listed. The price is great, the location is great, the building is great - but at this stage, I'm not sure where I'm going to find the down payment. I have first dibs. I have also been chosen, due to my new Montessori preschool, to be honoured by the local Chamber of Commerce as a new business in town. This is a big deal as the chamber has never taken note of a preschool before. I am stoked and full of giggles over the announcement.

Every night, I give my pillow a pat down to confirm if the token is safely stowed for the night. But now that the Year of the Tiger is coming to a close, do I have to stop having it in my pillowcase? I also realize this is very last minute, but when is the time for me to not wash my hair or clean my house? Thanks Lainey for the token from last new year. It has been a good year.

Marion – you can keep it under your pillow. Good luck with the new project!
