The Academy announced today that Tom Cruise will present at the Oscars, his first in five years. And in front of an audience that will include George Clooney and Brad Pitt who have, over the last decade or so, arguably exceeded him in reputation and prestige. Sanity too?
Tom’s last trip to the Kodak was in 2007. His job that night was to honour former Paramount chief Sherry Lansing. Little Sci was 10 months. He and Katie Holmes were married just 4 months before. The crazy and weird was still very fresh in our minds. He did not walk the carpet that night, and decided to meet up with Katie immediately following his show duties to present her at the Vanity Fair party.
And that’s when the Presentation of Katie Holmes was born.
This moment in Gossip Nostalgia was brought to you by my Congee. Because I am sick with a gross cold, my second in 4 weeks, and the memory of this moment has been the best part of my day so far. Watching them drop this move on playback was exactly what Michelle and I needed on a long night after a live show and many more hours to go.
Tom’s circumstances are different now. Fresh off the success of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and building on anticipation for this summer’s Rock Of Ages, I wonder if Tom might be much more accessible this time around. After all, Katie’s never been to the Oscars proper. What would a conversation between the Jolie and Katie look like? And can the director please move to Katie’s face if Michelle Williams wins Best Actress?
