I know this is right up my alley and exactly my thing, but c’mon, doesn’t The Avengers look cool? Marvel unveiled the teaser trailer yesterday I love it a whole lot. I love how good RDJ looks as Tony Stark. I love the glimpses of Tom Hiddleston as bad-guy Loki. I love how Scarlett Johansson is seen and not heard.

The concern for The Avengers is that it will be too much—too much stuff happening, too much sh*t blowing up, too many people. It could still be a mess but this trailer is encouraging. Why? Because it’s a lot of RDJ being sexy and snarky as Stark, mouthing off to everyone in the group and picking on boring Boy Scout Captain America, which is what I’ve been hoping for, and the trailer is making my dreams come true. I just hope that at some point Cap shuts down Stark with, “Yeah well I used to party with your dad, so go get me a beer, Junior.”

Here’s what I really like about this trailer (besides the fact that they don’t let ScarJo talk): it’s very confident. The director, Joss Whedon, has only ever directed culty stuff that doesn’t really click with the mainstream. Yet Marvel entrusted him with an expensive flagship property that doesn’t get much more mainstream. This trailer is proof of why. We get a look at everyone, we get an idea of what kind of vibe the movie will have but this is not the best stuff. You know it isn’t. At this point, The Avengers is self-perpetuating advertising and Whedon is confident enough to let that interest ride. He isn’t trying to up the ante at all, which is a good call at this point. Just give us a peek at what’s going on and save the shilling for next year.

Expectations are very high for The Avengers. I’m beginning to think Whedon is going to meet them.
