The cast of Black-ish was at PaleyFest yesterday. Did you see the episode on police brutality? It aired during Oscar week so I only caught up with it the week after. If you’ve not seen it yet, I recommend finding it on demand, if you can, or however you consume television. And if you have kids, have them sit down and spend the half hour with you. Because the entire episode is about how to talk to your children about racial inequality and about institutionalised racism. It’s about perspective – different opinions within the black community, different opinions among generations, different opinions from those who are not black – and it’s an American racial history lesson and it’s also funny and hopeful. All in just 30 minutes. And not on HBO …but on ABC!!!
I know. I KNOW. It seems impossible. But somehow Black-ish managed it. Which is why it’s one of the best shows on television right now. And also one of the most stylish? I mean I’m always watching what Tracee Ellis Ross is wearing but Yara Shahidi, at 16, is an emerging fashion star. Her clothes on the show are fun and edgy and accessible. There was a top she was wearing a couple of months ago with cats all over it that I found at H&M for $29! Click here to see. Come on. How cute is that? And the jumpsuit with the bomber she’s wearing here? And check her out at Kids’ Choice this weekend:
She’s got it. I am excited to see more.
