Destiny’s Child’s Survivor shuffled onto my iPod last night. I haven’t heard it in a while and I haven’t paid attention to the lyrics in even longer. Am now convinced it should be Katie Holmes’s theme song. Google that right now and see for yourself. Like every single word, right? Maybe she sings it to herself in the mirror, snapping her fingers. Please let her NOT perform it on an upcoming episode of So You Think You Can Dance. I mean, I’m all for the girl’s escape from Scientology but let’s not start whitewashing her questionable talents either, you know? Can I be on her side against Xenu but still think it’s ridiculous that she’s showing her collection at NY Fashion Week in September...? Let’s come back to this later. For now, you need your fix on the divorce situation; Katie leaving Tom has been a full-blown addiction for a majority of us.
So lawyers for both sides spent much of the weekend trying to negotiate a peaceful divorce agreement... what??? What happened to the nastiness? Well, it appears that, at least for now, Tom Cruise may be following the advice of the Hollywood side of his team who have urged him to keep it civil. That his career will be ok if he can maintain a dignified appearance. That they might even be able to sell it if he doesn’t make it ugly: oh what a kind, classy man... who so generously let go the woman he loves, even though she blindsided him and took off...
But they’ll have to get over the issue of custody. Katie went public with everything, forced him into a corner, so that she could ensure that Suri remains with her all the time. One of the problems here is pride. I’m told that Tom wants Suri in his life, certainly, but that he also does not want people to think that Katie’s getting sole custody because he’s an unfit parent which is what’s happened in the last week - people are questioning whether or not he can properly raise his daughter under the influence of Scientology. Tom Cruise cannot come out of this looking like he’s a threat to the women in his life - adult or child. Right now then, it seems like his priority is to settle the custody issues first ...and deal with Katie later. There are, of course, always other ways to avenge her betrayal. And besides, it doesn’t have to happen right away. They are well equipped to take her down in time.
Which is why Independent Katie is so busy multi-hyphenating, capitalising on all this goodwill. As previously mentioned, she will show her collection Holmes & Yang for the first time at NY Fashion Week in September and hope those clothes don't fall apart on the runway...because they look like they might fall apart when she wears them. Katie Holmes is to fashion design what Justin Timberlake is to acting. In addition to her style fraud though, PEOPLE reports that next week she'll start shooting a new movie called Molly. And apparently she wrote it? Molly is supposedly the story of a single mother with a daughter. We are not sure if it's the story of a single mother with a daughter who escapes a cult. Maybe it's a sequel to Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, due out this fall, allegedly based on Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. Needless to say, particularly now, the subject matter is of intense interest.
I don't know about Katie's, um, writing abilities. Better than her design skills?
Here's Katie out all weekend with and without Suri, amazingly flaunting her freedom in Tom's face. Yes. They check the internets. They monitor her appearance. And they are noting that she is not hiding, not shying away from the attention, almost in defiance of their warnings, protected by the public and also by the paparazzi following her movements.
Tom, on the other hand, as usual, has been stealth and undercover, waiting for the right time and opportunity to unveil himself for the first time as the heartbroken abandoned husband and father. Will we see him rescuing a baby from a burning building? Donating a kidney to a firefighter? Rescuing Michael Phelps from an accident so that he can go on to Olympic glory?
Tom loves a Hollywood ending. Watch.
