Coming in at number 8 on my list of Top 10 Fitness Takeaways for 2015 is:

Find Your Tribe & Get Involved

Whether you join a running club in your neighbourhood, a hiking group, a dance class, a recreational sports league or a yoga studio, make sure you find your people. When you are part of a group you are supported, you are held accountable, you make new friends, you achieve goals together and fitness becomes fun. Most importantly, you help each other through the downs and rejoice together on the ups.

Any time I have decided to try something new, which is number 10 on this list, I have joined a group. When I decided I wanted to learn how to run I joined a run club, which I stayed part of for years and still, to this day, run with people I met 20 years ago. When I wanted to do a triathlon I joined a triathlon group. When I trained for Ironman I trained with a triathlon team. Most recently, when I decided to take up mountain biking, I found a girls only mountain biking club. Without the groups and clubs I have joined in my past there is absolutely no way I would have accomplished half of what I have accomplished to this day.

Being a part of a team and having support is the best thing you can do for yourself and you will be 100 times more successful if you work towards a goal alongside others who are working towards the same thing. If you are already part of a group, ask someone you know to join it with you. It could be the best gift you ever give.

Here is tip number 3 for surviving the holiday season. You don’t get to have it all and you must choose what you indulge in at a dinner or cocktail party. You either get the bread (think cheese plates and baskets of French loaf) or the wine or the dessert. You can’t have it all 3. If you are at a party where it is just appetizers, make one plate for yourself and step away from the food. If it is a late party, having a small, healthy dinner beforehand is always a good idea.
