Dear Gossips,

Back in November, Zadie Smith was in Berlin to receive the 2016 Welt Literature Prize. I’ve been saving the transcript of her remarks to post today, the final blog day of 2016. Zadie’s talk, On Optimism and Despair, came just after the US election, and seems a fitting way to bookmark the end of this cycle of gossip and welcome the one on the way. There have been setbacks, sure. So many this year. Wistfulness, however, as Zadie argues, is itself a privilege. Rewinding can only be attractive to those who knew equality and opportunity in the past. If that was never an option though, the only way is ahead: “incremental progress”, progress bound by “human limitation”, for we are not perfect. It’s a much more realistic approach to dreams. Continue to dream, of course, but with awareness. Because, as Zadie writes, “progress is never permanent, will always be threatened, must be redoubled, restated, and reimagined if it is to survive”.

There is warning in that, sure. But I like the reimagining. I definitely see the optimism in imagination. So thank you for continuing to imagine and reimagine with us here at LaineyGossip this year, and all the years before it. We will keep trying to progress incrementally. We are so grateful for your support and patience and tolerance despite our very human limitations. We cannot tell you enough how much we appreciate that you come here for distraction but also for discussion. We hope you will continue visiting for the distraction and staying for the discussion next year.

Thank you so much for believing: that gossip has value, that gossip is communication, that gossip is GOOD! That girl sh-t is the best sh-t and boy sh-t is even better.

To more distraction, to more discussion, and to more good gossip in 2017!

Wishing you a safe and happy weekend. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
