Dear Gossips,
Considering the long-ass award season that just wrapped up, you’re probably not going to want to hear me say these words: the Emmys. But the eligibility window for this year’s Emmys closes in about six weeks. And early campaigning has started because nominations voting begins in just eight weeks which means the series and the talent who are hoping for consideration are mobilising. Just this morning The Hollywood Reporter published its first Emmys 2024 forecast. So, yes, the conversation has begun.
And the conversation will definitely include Shogun. I covered the Shogun junket for ETALK a few weeks ago so I’ve seen the first two episodes, but I’ve been waiting for more episodes to air before picking it back up again and posting about the show extensively here. It makes me less anxious if I know I still have at least an episode in the bank when I’m watching and with Shogun the first two episodes were SO good, and SO epic, I need the psychological comfort that I can keep going if I need to…
All this to say, episode eight is out today, which means we’re down to only two more, and now it’s time, time for me to go back to feudal Japan and dig into what is one of the most acclaimed, if not the most acclaimed, new series of 2024. The scale of it, the quality of the production, and the performances – Shogun is a major critical and commercial hit, making history as “the number one scripted series premiere globally for Disney General Entertainment”, another example that audiences, no matter where they’re from, will read the f-cking subtitles when you give them a good story! And Shogun is an exceptional story.
So, circling back to the Emmys, Hiroyuki Sanada should be a frontrunner in the Best Actor Anthology Limited Series category for a nomination. And my GOD, Anna Sawai should 100% be in there on the Best Actress side.
More on Shogun coverage is coming in the next couple of weeks. And if you haven’t already, get on it! Shogun is an incredible achievement.
Here’s Hiroyuki throwing out the first pitch at the Dodgers game last week.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
