Alicia Keys was shooting a video in LA the other night believed to be for the MTV EMAs. Now this is a look.

First of all, her face, her skin, so pretty with the pale pink lips and not much fuss on the eyes. And I love the long braid with the big hoops. You’ll see that the sparkly tank top has a matching mask. This is a fashion mask. She’s not wearing it to greet people, we don’t have to get mad about her compromising health and safety – it’s a purely aesthetic decision; she’s filming, there’s no Lana Del Rey going on here. But also, Alicia’s mask doesn’t look like mesh to me. There are no holes. It’s a solid piece of fabric tricked out with embellishment so I feel like it functions in much the same way as the cloth masks so many of us are wearing these days. Am I wrong? Have a closer look and let me know.

It’s the coat, however, that’s the spectacle here. This coat moves like a bathrobe, even though the material looks to be so much heavier. But that’s what I like about it – that it hangs and folds without stiffness. And while it’s obviously not the same at all, for some reason it reminds me of what I consider to be a famous movie coat. The movie is from 2001, do you know it?

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft rides on a sled and it was a badass scene then and I still love it now. That coat made it.

That’s what popped into my mind when I saw Alicia in the coat. Maybe the braid had something to do with it too?
