…Are in Matthew Weiner’s new show, The Romanoffs. Of course, when you make Mad Men, one of the most admired dramas of all time, people will be eager to sign onto your next project but even still this cast list is INSANE. The trailer is a who’s who directory—John Slattery, Christina Hendricks, Isabelle Huppert, Corey Stoll, Paul Reiser, Amanda Peet, Ron Livingston, Diane Lane, and that’s just what I can remember without rewatching the trailer or checking IMDB. It’s a sh*t ton of famous people, and I’m sure I’ve missed some and there are undoubtedly more not featured in the trailer.
I did check IMDB, though, and everyone is credited with one episode. The trailer tag says “eight stories” and there are eight episodes so I assume this is an anthology of interconnected stories and not one serialized drama. I’m into that, especially as it revolves around people who believe they are descended from Russia’s imperial family. It could be interesting to see how that kind of mythos perpetuates through different circumstances. I’m a little bummed Matthew Weiner didn’t make a dramatization of the real-life squabbling going on between actual Romanov descendants who can’t decide on who should be the head of the family, or that it’s not a miniseries about the fall of the Romanovs—I do not understand how no one is doing this, especially as this year marked the 100th anniversary of the imperial family murders. But an interlocking narrative about people with the same (probable) delusion starring a parade of famous people is good, too.
