I mentioned Angelina Jolie yesterday in the final post of the day when I linked to the news that she’ll be heading to Cannes to present the 25th Trophée Chopard. On Friday night she’ll present the award to rising stars Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett.

Over the years, the Trophée Chopard has been bestowed to a long list of talent from around the world who’ve gone on to big careers. Just a few examples: Gael Garcia Bernal, Marion Cotillard, James McAvoy, Tang Wei, John Boyega, Anya Taylor-Joy, Florence Pugh, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jessie Buckley, Mike Faist, Naomi Ackie, and more. Angelina Jolie, once Hollywood’s punk princess, is now a big sister…or a Godmother, which is the title the festival has given her.

But as I said yesterday, there’s business to be done. She shot a French film by Alice Winocour last year that was called Stitches and has now been retitled to Couture. It takes place during Paris Fashion Week – just the thought of Angelina Jolie against that backdrop is exciting. No release date has been set for Couture, but Cannes is a marketplace and deals are made all the time. Speaking of, they’re hoping to make a deal during the next couple of weeks for her next project: Anxious People, to be directed by Marc Forster, about “an investment banker (Jolie) who finds herself thrown together with a group of strangers on Christmas Eve when a reluctant bank robber takes them all hostage”, adapted from the book by Fredrik Backman who also wrote A Man Called Ove which was also adapted by the same team into A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks. This is an ensemble piece, I’m very much looking forward to Angelina in this setting. She seemed to have a lot of fun in the Eternals ensemble and also…are we getting Angie in a comedy? It’s about time.

Here's Angelina yesterday in LA heading to lunch before she leaves for the festival for the first time in …well…years. Like over a decade. Not since 2011 and this:

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attend 'The Tree of Life' film premiere at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, Cannes, May 16, 2011

In other Cannes related news, the festival is busy every night, but for our gossip purposes, the splashiest days this week are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Wednesday is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and all the Tom Cruiseness that brings. Friday is Ari Aster’s Eddington with an ensemble cast that includes Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Buttler, and more. Plus, Kristen Stewart’s feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. And then on Saturday it’s Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. Get ready.
