This website is about celebrities and gossip and also the way we gossip, and one of the biggest gossip stories coming out of the Tony Awards involves one of the biggest movie stars in the world, who isn’t a Broadway star but a Broadway producer, winning a Tony Award for being one of the producers of the Tony winner for Best Musical, The Outsiders: A New Musical.

Angelina Jolie is now has an Oscar and a Tony and it happened because her daughter, Vivienne, encouraged her to be involved in the production. I love how Angie explained it to Deadline:

“My daughter Viv loves theater. She appreciates all theater but she certainly knows what she feels close to and what she responds to. She went to see The Outsiders at La Jolla about five times and was telling me about it, and I had read the book, and I’d seen the film years ago. Then she asked me to come see it with her, and I thought it was just a…you know, Danya speaks of how important it is to teenagers, how it was written by somebody who’s the age of my daughter, right? So, really, as a mother, as a person, I was watching it, but I was really watching the effect it was having on my young daughter and what she was telling me about herself, and I was learning what about it was important to her and why it connected so deeply to her.”

“So, it was a very different experience of understanding, of how this is having a significant effect on her as a young person right now, and she’s communicating something to me, and that is the power of this material, which was in really good shape even by then,” Jolie continued. “And then I had the privilege of watching everyone work over this last year to make it into what it is, and Vivienne has been there the whole way.”

For Angelina, personally, her connection to The Outsiders was about the influence it was having on her child, and what her child was responding to in the story. Vivienne was sharing something about herself with her mother through the musical – which is one of the purest purposes of art: it can reveal to others who we are, not only for the artists who are making it, but also for those who are receiving it.

This Tony then truly belongs to both of them, and this process of seeing the production through is an experience they will obviously treasure forever, no matter what would have happened last night, win or not. And there were multiple wins. In addition to Best Musical, The Outsiders won for Best Direction (Danya Taymor), Best Lighting, and Best Sound Design. Angelina presented during the show, introducing the company of The Outsiders but was super low-key for the other big moments; she did not speak when The Outsiders was named Best Musical, nor did she show up in the press room.

As many people on The Outsiders team have noted, including director Danya Taymor, her contributions were significant but mostly behind-the-scenes. This, of course, is intentional, so as to keep the focus on the performers and other artists in the production, but also it’s not like she doesn’t know how much attention she already brings with her just by showing up. Which brings us back to the gossip and the fact that she is the headline coming out of Tonys and The Outsiders winning Best Musical; she doesn’t need to do much more for them, us, to make it about her.

Angelina and Vivienne were matching in green. Angie was in Versace, an interesting shade of green in velvet. I don’t hate it, but it’s giving Disney princess. What I do like about it is that in some angles, the wrap that comes with the gown looks like the back of a denim jacket.

What I also like about this choice is that it’s different for her, that she didn’t just pick a black or nude sack dress and call it a day. And, maybe, Vivienne Jolie had something to do with that too.
