Dear Gossips,

The Cannes Film Festival has concluded for another year. Sean Baker’s Anora won the Palme d’Or, the first American director to win the award since 2011 and the fifth Neon film in a row to win the highest honour at Cannes.

Last year it was Anatomy of a Fall and we saw that film go onto the Oscars with five nominations and eventually winning Best Original Screenplay. Will be interesting to see what kind of a campaign Neon puts behind Anora and how this story about a sex worker and her relationship with the song of a Russian oligarch will be received.

More about Cannes through the day but right now the focus is on Lily Gladstone and her final fashion serve as a member of this year’s jury. Custom Prada:

Prada, fine, but the whole point of this look is the jewellery, right? This necklace is a showstopper.

Lily Gladstone attends the closing ceremony red carpet at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 24, 2024 in Cannes, France

And a full-circle moment because it was a year ago at Cannes that Killers of the Flower Moon had its world premiere and Lily’s arrival on the A List. Which, by the way, and I’ll do the boasting for her, is when Sarah was like, oh hi everyone, where you been? Because she’s was all about Lily from back in 2016.

In the 12 months since Cannes 2023, Lily became an award season fan favourite, a style star, a television star, has come back to the festival as a jury member, and could be a factor at the Emmys. So the momentum continues, as it should. Lily Gladstone deserves more than just one great year. We’re looking, if we’re lucky, at a great decade.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
