Taylor Swift wore green to the Golden Globes. She was wearing green a couple of days ago when she was photographed at Electric Lady Studios in a green sweater dress. And she wore green again last night while out for dinner with Blake Lively, Zoë Kravitz, Jerrod Carmichael, and Jack Antonoff. This time she paired the green dress with snake boots which of course Swifties are taking to mean that this should be obvious: reputation (Taylor’s Version) is imminent.
After all, the snake was the symbol of the reputation era. The reputation mood was grudge and petty, Taylor declaring that the old her was dead, killed off by backstabbers and gossips, pressured by her enemies to reincarnate as a reptile shedding the skin of performed perfection to reveal her true inner villain.
In her TIME Person of the Year interview, when she was talking about re-recording reputation, she said that, “I’m collecting horcruxes. I’m collecting infinity stones. Gandalf’s voice is in my head every time I put out a new one”. We have seen, over the last few months, how she updated the energy of 1989 for the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), with self-throwbacks to her style and vibes from that period of career – fun and friends, squad hangs and silly nights.
What will it look like when she revisits and reclaims reputation? Has it already started? What happened at the Globes between her, Selena Gomez, Keleigh Teller and Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner was very reputation-coded: beef and spilled tea, rivalries and whispered secrets. Now she’s giving so much green and putting snakes on her body, knowing how her fandom reads into every detail, every gesture, every thread of clothing…
It's been a year of everything coming up Taylor, where any and all situations swung in her favour whether she intended them to or not. And now even the biggest gossip story so far of 2024 may be an accidental boost for her next big release.
For now, though, we have to wait, at least through the weekend, because Kansas City plays Miami on Saturday in the wild card game and if Taylor’s planning to go to the game, I can’t imagine that reputation will be part of that appearance. Green is a colour more closely associated with the Dolphins so the green streak will likely come to a (temporary) halt in favour of red. If KC wins, red will remain on the weekends. If they lose, however, it’ll be interesting to see if it’s green all the way.
