Sydney Sweeney is currently in London promoting Echo Valley, her new project with Julianne Moore. But she’s making headlines for another reason, related to another movie – Anyone But You. This, of course, was the film in which she co-starred with Glen Powell amid wild speculation that the two were hooking up during production. And those rumours persist, as recently as a few months ago when Sydney’s engagement to Jonathan Davino was called off and some people wondered if it was because of Glen or whether or not she and Glen would have a clear path to something now that she’s not getting married anymore.
Glen was also in a relationship though when he and Sydney were working together and promoting the movie. Here he is with Gigi Paris in November 2022 at the premiere of Devotion, a couple of months before he and Sydney started shooting.

At that point Glen and Gigi had been together three years and as Maria mentioned yesterday in Celebrity Social Media, Gigi is now speaking publicly about their breakup. In short, it sucked for her to have to be made a fool of when those two were out there leaning into the speculation and most of us I think can sympathise with what her experience would have been like.

Gigi also talks about how she wanted to spend time with Glen and on a phone call at one point he urged her not to come to him because if they were seen it would ruin the whole play. Subsequently, as we know, both Glen and Sydney revealed that they were indeed performing for publicity but the cost of it was that Glen and Gigi broke up. And while those two could at least claim a box office win for their trouble, if it was even trouble at all, Gigi didn’t take away from the fauxmance anything other than embarrassment and heartbreak.
Glen, obviously, now that we’re two years clear of the situation, is the asshole here. And that’s, generally, been the reaction as this story has spread. Some might argue that if Sydney wasn’t operating on girl code either but ultimately she’s not responsible for Glen’s relationship, he is.
But also… aren’t we kind of the asshole too? Like the internet, the public, everyone on socials engaged in the speculation – didn’t we allow ourselves to get played by them? What does it matter, for the sake of enjoying a rom-com, if the two people in the rom-com are actually f-cking? Many of the best rom-coms of the last 25 years featured actors, just actors, doing their jobs and acting but not f-cking IRL. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger were not dating before, during, or after 10 Things I Hate About You. There was nothing between Pretty Woman stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Nothing between Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo in 13 Going on 30. That’s just three examples but I would argue that the majority of rom-coms feature stars who weren’t hooking up. It’s not a prerequisite… at least it wasn’t, but I wonder if it is one for this generation of moviegoers.
As for Sydney’s looks in London, as usual, I like her street style so much more than her red carpet style.
