Jessie J is MOTHER
OK I know the kids say that and I don’t exactly know what it means but I have a request for this Jessie J outfit. She is wearing a Mother cardigan and I’m pretty sure the slit jeans are Margiela. (Thanks Melissa!)
Kate Hudson boho staple
One thing we can say about Kate Hudson’s style is that it’s consistent: she has been into the LA-boho aesthetic forever. What, exactly, is boho? I would describe it as lots of prints, flowy cuts, tassels, fringe, embroidery, layering and chunky jewelry. It’s basically the complete opposite of the “quiet luxury” style that has taken over our feeds.
That said, I still find boho hard to pin down. Let’s take Nicole Richie as another example of someone who has heavily dabbled in this aesthetic since her styled-by-Rachel-Zoe days. Full disclosure, I adore Nicole’s style because she can do boho without looking like a she’s dressed in a costume. This Rabanne dress isn’t shy about the fringe and print and she carries it so well.
But she can also switch it up and go for a monochromatic suit, she’s not tied to one aesthetic. And again, this suit could be overpowering because it is so BLUE, but she wears the sh-t out of it.
OK I went off about Nicole Richie when I’m really writing about Kate Hudson’s blouse, particularly the purple blouse in this photo (flip to the second slide).
It’s Isabel Marant, a label that brought eclectic French streetwear to the LA set. When this label first rose in popularity, it was super hard to get a piece. Her puffy sneakers would sell out in a flash. I remember the only department store in Vancouver that carried it having wait lists and pre-orders, which is pretty rare for any label today.
As the label grew, private equity came in and that’s why you can now buy branded sweatshirts and t-shirts and hats and bags. That’s the way it goes. Today, I don’t really know what this label is – boho, rock and roll, maybe slightly Western? All of those are back (if they ever left) and she talks about it in a new interview with WWD.
All that is to say Kate’s top is from her closet but there are a few purple blouses from the line this season and this looks somewhat similar.
Emma Roberts at Coachella
Emma Roberts is a Coachella regular so she’s pretty much a pro at dressing for a desert music festival. I’m liking the blue bathing suit and purple sunglasses with the cowboy boots – it’s kind of impractical and fun and exactly the kind of thing I would expect to see there. Emma is a big sponcon girlie, she has multiple deals with different brands. That’s probably why she tagged all the pieces except the bathing suit – it’s Bond-Eye (the blue is sold out but there’s other colours). If you want Emma’s tag, you better produce a cheque.
What’s more interesting about Coachella this year is that there is very little coverage of what people are wearing or doing. It seems… quiet. And I’m not the first to ask this but if people aren’t interested in the fashion, is that yet another sign that Coachella is over?
