Oprah’s MOTHER moment

I was happy to get this request because it lines up with a new purchase that I hate to admit I love: Mother Denim. These jeans are everywhere right now, the same way Current/Elliot, JBrand, 7s, Citizens of Humanity, Frame and Slvrlake have all had their moment. Right now it’s Mother’s turn to be the $400 jeans du jour.

I bought a pair a few weeks back from Over the Rainbow, a Toronto boutique and sorry to say, I love them. I’m sorry because hot damn they are pricey but part of my justification is that they make a petite range and as someone who is under 5’4” this is necessary. Yes you can get jeans hemmed but the fit is often all wrong, the knees are too low and the waist is too high, they are all out of proportion. If possible, buying denim in your height range is much better for fit.

Oprah’s jeans are The Hustler and she loves a front pocket, she’s worn this style a few times including a pair from Louis Vuitton. I prefer these.

Amy Poehler's Retired sweatshirt

I know we are at max capacity for podcasts but the popularity of Amy Poehler’s relatively new series goes to show just how much she is liked. Her shows aren’t cult classics (Parks & Rec wasn’t a mainstream hit, but people are devoted to it the same way they are The Office), she had a long run on SNL, she’s done movies, she shows up and everyone is happy about it. The Gen X Martin Short? Too soon to say but there is a similar verve to them.

Her podcast guest list is an extension of that. She recently had on Quinta Brunson and I was asked about Amy’s “retired” sweatshirt. I searched and came up with a theory that it is Aviator Nation (which is known for the lightning bolt branding) with custom embroidery. I couldn’t find it so in my mind this was a departing gift from SNL or Parks & Rec. I have nothing to base it on, but it’s a nice story.

Renée Rapp’s ski style

Maybe she’s snowboarding and not skiing actually, I don’t know. Every photo in this carousel features at least one great piece (I like her style) but we are honing in on photo 7 (Gen Z is not afraid of a photo dump!). It’s a printed henley (she’s wearing it under a red ski bib (I think that’s what it is called?). The shirt is FP Movement Rally Printed Layer Top. It is sold out but there’s loads of stuff on Free People, Depop, Poshmark and other resellers.

Everyone has their favourite brands but I’ve noticed on resale sites there’s the luxury and then there’s the low-end (like super junky fast fashion) and then there’s the middle-range brands like Madewell, Abercrombie (which makes excellent denim BTW), Free People, some Zara (depends on the line), Mango, COS, and Aritzia that are bought and sold swiftly.

Shopping is totally the wild west right now and considering the general anxiety around spending money at the moment and the high level of scrutiny around shopping and where our clothes come from and how much we are buying, if you haven’t started at least browsing pre-loved, give it a whirl. At the very least, it’s great window shopping.

Here's Oprah the other day at the gym.
