The Secret Trench Coat of College Girls
I really liked Mindy Kalin’s double take at the Oscars, wearing the same Vera Wang dress in two different colours (black and white). Mindy likes to play with fashion and cares about style and that comes through in her work on The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever, and The Sex Lives of College Girls. The wardrobe is noticeable and contributes to the story and the character development. Mindy is not going to get upset if you ask her who she is wearing. She’s not going to be offended if you want to deep dive into character wardrobe choices either.
The Sex Lives of College Girls is a fun show and I love that the four main characters all have really distinct wardrobes – Leighton as a cosmopolitan rich girl, Whitney as the elite athlete, Bela as the comedy nerd and Kimberly as the Pollyanna-ish academic (who really showed her true colours in the last episode, hmmmmm).
A reader requested I find the black trench coat Kimberly wore in the season finale and it looks very similar to a Joe Fresh coat that is sold out (but available sporadically on resale sites).
With this in mind, a good black trench is a staple so I went to the stores that excel in basics like a drapey coat from Everlane; a waterproof version from Sam Edelman at Nordstrom in the US; from Orolay, the makers of the Amazon coat comes this double breasted coat with gold buttons (if you don’t want to shop Amazon, you can get it directly from Orolay; a Zara option with a pronounced back flap; and finally this option is not black, but the grey trench from Club Monaco is making me feel a certain way. (Thank you Inessa!)
Wednesday’s flared denim
Right now, there’s no dominant denim trend and I think fashion is better for it. You can pretty much get any cut, length or colour right now. Dark blue boyfriend jeans? Easy. Black skinnies? Lots of options. Seventies flares? No problem. A few weeks back I covered Simone Ashley’s front-seam jeans and if there was a trend (which I’m not sure it is yet), it’s the front seam. Jenna Ortega wore a pair to her SNL afterparty and Jenna’s are the Shaft Jeans Tank Jewel (Who What Wear sourced these). Even though flare isn’t for everyone (definitely not for me) I appreciate them on her, particularly the dark blue colour. I found a similar style (minus the seam) at from Mango and these Joe Jeans with a seam and split.
Lindsay’s statement onesie
Lindsay Lohan made a simple and straightforward pregnancy announcement with the Coming Soon onesie and it can be found on Etsy (obviously). Etsy, like Amazon, has gone through some major algorithm changes and to shop more locally, adjust the settings before you browse (I always set to see products from Canadian shops like this one and skip over anything sponsored).
Kerry Washington’s Main Bitch energy
Kerry Washington looks like she’s having fun promoting UnPrisoned and for one event wore all green (styled by Luxury Law! The boots are Bally) and added a Main Bitch t-shirt. People in the comments are already asking for it and all the options I’ve found are giving “homemade” which is totally fine as I’ve ordered random t-shirts from Instagram but that’s the Wild Wild West of shopping. It’s risky. You don’t know what you are going to get. (I once ordered a pair of jeans and someone mailed me a piece of string? It was so weird.) So I’m going to say if you want this Main Bitch shirt, check the comments and you will quickly find people selling them. But don’t say I didn’t warn you! (If it does work out, I do want all the credit though.)
