As mentioned, if an actor is in the race for the Oscars in the given year, chances are they’ll be at Academy’s Governors Awards – even Eddie Murphy showed up at one of the most critical stops on the campaign trail. So it’s here where we can get a sense of how the studios will be strategising and positioning their contenders, especially this year, when the field across so many categories, right now, looks so deep. The Best Actress race seems especially competitive. Here are the possibilities, random order:

Renee Zellweger, Judy
Cynthia Erivo, Harriet
Alfre Woodard, Clemency
Charlize Theron, Bombshell
Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
Lupita Nyong’o, Us
Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story

And…Awkwafina for her performance in The Farewell. Nora Lum could be an Oscar nominee in three months! Nora Lum might be the one having the most fun. For her, realistically, the win would be the nomination. So without that pressure, being that she’s already an underdog, she can just ride this experience, and use it as an opportunity to build new relationships, to secure her next Oscar-nominated role.

So here’s Nora hanging out with Charlize:

The Farewell was released in the summer which is when the Oscar buzz first started. Somehow there’s still buzz, mostly around Awkwafina’s performance, and she’s still part of the conversation, even though there are bigger names involved in the race. Oscar presenters aren’t writing her off either. She is IN this as a strong, if not likely, possibility.
